Having obtained a 2:1 LLB Hons from Leicester Poytechnic, Michael announced that he was suspending his plans for a career in the law to pursue his dream of writing for film and television. In spite of some favourable feedback, and it must be said a few rejection letters, he decided in 1994 to join his father's firm of law costs draftsmen A.C. Costing Ltd. Whilst at this firm he acquired a solid grounding in all manner of publicly and privately funded work, which over the following years he has built upon with lengthy stints at two leading costs drafting firms in the City. During this period he has also become a regular advocate in the County Courts, the SCCO and, on one occasion, even the Privy Council. Whilst waiting for the call from Hollywood he presently specialises in the fields of personal injury, clinical negligence, and commercial litigation.
